Hardness

The descriptions of almost all polyurethane products our company produces contain the words “Shore hardness: 65” or “Shore hardness: 80.” But not everyone understands what this measure of hardness stands for.

In this article, we’ll try to answer the most frequently asked questions about it.

What is hardness, and how does it differ from density?

Many of our customers confuse a substance’s hardness and density — but they are completely different concepts.
Hardness is the property of a material to resist being penetrated by another, harder object.
Density is the ratio of an object’s mass to the volume or area it occupies.

Thus, bodies in solid, liquid or gaseous states may exhibit density, whereas hardness is characteristic only of solids.

How is hardness measured?

Hardness is expressed in standard units. The method used to measure hardness is usually also indicated (Brinnel method, Vickers method, Shore method, etc.).

Most hardness scales are used for metals or minerals.

What do we mean by hardness?

When we use this concept in describing our products, we’ve basically mean hardness as measured using a durometer.
A durometer is a special instrument for determining a material’s hardness in standard units according to the indentation method developed by Albert Shore. To evaluate our products, we use Shore’s A scale, which is intended for softer materials.

What are the hardnesses of OOO Polyurethane’s products?

We mass-produce parts with three hardness levels:

This is how we designate the three hardness ranges for the material we use:

72 – from 68 to 76 on the Shore A scale
80 – from 76 to 84 on the Shore A scale
87 – from 84 to 90 on the Shore A scale

We attempt to manufacture parts with a hardness comparable to that of the original in order to avoid changing the mechanical properties of the suspensions of the vehicles on which our parts will be installed. And since the rubber that parts contain usually has a hardness of 65 to 75 on the Shore A scale, most of the silent blocks and bushings we produce have a hardness of 72 and are thus given our company’s favourite cheerful orange colour
